We tasted the 2007 vintage of both Francis Ford Coppola Rosso, a blend of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sirah, and Francis Ford Coppola Bianco, a California pinot grigio,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the fall and were impressed with the quality of both, particularly at the prevailing retail price of $9 to $12. They didn’t have the richness and complexity of more expensive wines, but were balanced, well-made wines that are the perfect type to have around for daily sipping or to go with simple, weekday meals.

Magruder’s on Connecticut Ave. just south of the DC/Maryland line is closed today under two-feet of snow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but presuming it gets shoveled out for Monday, they have the cheapest price we’ve seen nationwide on a very good pair of value wines from Francis Ford Coppola.
“A pale, lemon-colored wine with a lively nose of citrus and tropical fruits,” writes Lisa Dinsmore on her Daily Wine Dispatch website of Coppola Bianco, which she bought at Whole Foods in California for $10 in October. “The palate is light-bodied with brisk acidity and flavors of lemon, peach, melon and notes of banana on the crisp finish. Drier than most US versions, this is a clean and well-crafted wine."
Total Wine stores in Virginia sell them for $7.49,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a terrific bargain. (They’re priced at $8.99 at Total’s sister stores in Maryland, Corridor Wine & Spirits and Beltway Fine Wine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for example, and for $10.99 on Wine.com.) But this week through Tuesday – assuming you can get there through the snow – Magruder’s has both on sale for an unhead-of $5.99 a bottle. We stopped at Magruder’s on the way out of town yesterday, stocking up in advance of the record-breaking snowstorm.
We picked up the last bottle of the Foxglove Zinfandel on sale for $12.99, and there’s a good chance the schedule delivery on Monday won’t happen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so there may not be more to be had at that price. Fortunately, they had plenty of the Coppola in the store and won’t be selling out today (since they're closed!).
