Montana NFL players give back with ‘Jerseys for usa' Here’s the scary thing: Hester isn’t anywhere close to finished.
By the time Hester stops run-ning, who knows how many return touchdowns he might have? Twenty? Twenty-five? More?,,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],authentic [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Those possibilities have some people speculating that Hester might earn a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, after his playing days are over.
The Northwest Herald sat down with Hester this week at Halas Hall for a one-on-one conversation about everything from his workday to his office attire to his thoughts about the Hall of Fame.
If you had a sibling you really, really liked, or more than one - like me - you could dole out some serious coin and buy that knockout Christmas gift.
Or you could do what the Schillinger kids did: They pooled their resources and gathered the jerseys worn by the seven Montanans currently in the NFL.
"[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] We bought [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], real game jerseys," said Jace Schillinger, who spent the past two seasons coaching football at the University of North Dakota. "We're going to have them signed, and we're going to raffle them off."
The idea is called "Jerseys for a Cause," and is aimed at helping the families of Cash Hyde and Tyler Hennes, two Missoula youths fighting cancer at enormous cost.
The 14-year-old Hennes' younger brother was a student of Brandy Greff, Jace's sister, when she taught third grade in Stevensville last year.
Hyde - or, more accuately, 2-year-old "Cashy" - is all over Facebook.Bears return man Devin Hester needed 74 games and less than five full seasons in the NFL to accomplish something that no one else in league history had achieved throughout their careers.
Hester, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] 28, fielded a punt at the Bears’ 36-yard line and returned it 64 yards for a touchdown Dec. 20 against the Minnesota Vikings. That marked the 14th return touchdown of his career, which moved him past former special-teams standout Brian Mitchell for sole possession of first place on the NFL’s all-time list.
"The connection there is Cash's family is like the ultimate Griz family," said Schillinger. "We're hoping that this kind of takes off and we're able to raise some money for those families."
The concept took shape before Schillinger came out for UND's football game against the Griz.
"My sister and I, and my brother, talked a couple months ago," he said. "We're all getting to that point where gifts aren't that important. We thought instead of spending money on each other, we'd direct it toward a couple families in Montana."
Then they ran it past their dad, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Jim, a former Griz running back now working the family farm between Circle and Wolf Point.
"Any time Dad thinks something is a good idea, we usually roll with it," Jace said, laughing. "He's a little bit pessimistic sometimes."
You could say this was about Griz Nation, except for the presence of Montana State product Dane Fletcher. But Fletcher, who wears No. 52 for New England, is family in another way.
He was coached at Bozeman High by Bill Walker, who happens to be Brandy and Jace's uncle.
"I have a lot of Bobcat friends who I figured might not want a Griz jersey," noted Greff, an MSU graduate. "But it seems like everybody in Montana has a lot of pride in their football programs, and just want to do whatever they can cheap,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] ."
The other six Montanans on current NFL rosters are Grizzlies, including Jace's brother Shann. The Baker product wears No. 39 for the Atlanta Falcons.
Schillinger's teammate, Kroy Biermann from Hardin, wears No. 71. Colt Anderson of Butte wears No. 30 for the Philadelphia Eagles; Marc Mariani, Havre Blue Pony and a Griz, wears No. 83 for the Tennessee Titans. Two Miami Dolphins and former Griz fill out the list - kicker Dan Carpenter, from Helena, wears No. 5 and running back Lex Hilliard, a Kalispell native, wears No. 26.
Tickets are $10 for one, $50 for six and $100 for 13, and your entries can be sent to Greff at P.O. Box 17922 in Missoula, 59808. Include your name, phone number and the jersey you'd prefer.
The drawings will be Feb. 6, the day of Super Bowl XLV [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it's possible at least one of those numbers will be seen in Cowboys Stadium. The Patriots, Eagles and Falcons are all playoff-bound.
"We hope to be somewhere," said Greff, "on Super Bowl Sunday."
