I hope and pray that this day will be joyous for you. Some will repeat traditions while others establish new ones. Some will deal with the stark reality of family and friends no longer with us. For others, it is the joy of a baby’s first Christmas or the first Christmas as a newlywed.
Some of you will be trying to figure out how to put a bike, toy or other gift together and others are just now remembering the batteries they needed. Still others are required to work.
However you spend this Christmas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], please don’t miss the meaning of the day. According to the American Institute of Stress and The American Psychological Association (2009), Americans experience a level of stress and busyness that few in history have ever known.
Our ever-developing world requires high production that takes its toll on personal lives. Stress and anxiety is estimated to affect more than 19 million Americans and growing. Stress levels are deeply affected by work in 62 percent of Americans. Another 33 percent of Americans suffer job burn out, and this is thought to be due to stress at the work place. About 70 percent of workers are unhappy in their current employment due to work-related stress. More than $290 billion is spent in the U.S. economy every year relating to compensation claims from on-the-job stress, health insurance, low-productivity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and disability.
Today, please don’t allow busyness and stress to create a loss of focus on the reason that we celebrate Christmas in the first place. As much as Mary and Joseph needed rest from their long and difficult journey, the innkeeper's busyness left them without a place to give birth to the Savior of mankind.
The first Christmas took place in the backdrop of a busy and filled city and an innkeeper who missed having the Savior born in his inn. Think of the potential marketing slogans: ‘Jesus born here,’ or ‘Jesus slept here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],’ or ‘Stay where Jesus stayed.’ The truth is, the innkeeper stands as an example of being caught up doing a good thing but missing the best thing.
The innkeeper’s experience of that first Christmas should teach us all to slow down and to be sensitive enough to hear God knocking on our heart’s door and open it and invite Him in and make room for Him in our daily lives. Our attitude and perspective have a lot to do with whether we embrace or miss a blessing. Imagine the blessing the innkeeper would have experienced had he made room for Joseph and Mary. He would have been part of the birth of Christ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], been witness to the greatest miracle ever performed. He would have looked into the face of God, held God’s Son, and been filled with hope at the site of the world’s Savior. Yet his busyness robbed him of those blessings. Apply this lesson to your own life. “We don’t need to pray for more miracles, we just need to be more sensitive to the opportunities that God brings our way.” �D Andy Stanley.
Take time today to focus on Jesus’ birth. Even if you are unsure of His birth and have questions, go ahead and ask them. “Wise men still seek Him.” On this Christmas day and in all that is right, don’t miss what is best.
