About the only thing on the Chip Shop's menu that doesn't do a stint in the deep-fat fryer is the savory pies, which after all is the raison d'être of this series. There are six varieties to choose from—seven if you include deep-fried pizza (I kid you not). Of those encased in a pastry crust, the steak and kidney pie is the standout. The chunks of kidney in particular have been stewed to the point where they are tender enough to feed to a toddler; one customer was doing precisely that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], during my visit. The steak and onion pie is also fine, though curiously, with either pie the gravy you expect to find inside is served separately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in a bowl. You'll have no complaint ultimately if you spoon some of the thick peppery sauce on the mountain of chips that are served alongside. These are the fat, stubby species of fries that the Brits excel at. All the savory pies are $11, except for the three variations on shepherd's pie, which are $12 and include a variant in which the protein is replaced by wild mushrooms.
