"I always tell people that not only is he a very, very good quarterback but he’s a better person than he is a quarterback. He’s got a level head. His parents [Jack and Judy] have instilled in him phenomenal values and the whole family is that way. I bet he probably still kind of feels,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ‘What just happened to me?’”
Typical of most mothers, Judy LeFevour said Dan already has the best job in the NFL because a third-string quarterback rarely gets to play and thus is at reduced risk of getting injured. But LeFevour’s competitiveness won’t allow him to rest on his laurels and he is determined to move up the depth chart.
“I can’t say enough good things about him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” Goforth said. “He’s a smart kid. He’s going to do fine.”
“I’m definitely grateful for what I’ve accomplished but I know it’s not the end of it,” he said. “I’m hoping to improve to where I can have a long career in the NFL.”
“I’ve always wanted to play in the NFL,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” said LeFevour, whose No. 11 jersey was retired by Benet in a ceremony last Friday. “Maybe in high school I didn’t think about it, but once I got to Central Michigan and had the success I had there running and throwing it became realistic.”
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] onsale “It was interesting,” LeFevour said. “It was a lot of new experiences and [seeing] a lot of new cities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but overall it was a positive experience. There’s so much to learn.”
LeFevour said the best part of being in the NFL is playing with and against the best players in the world. Seeing their son compete at the highest level is certainly a thrill for his parents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who saw him play twice in person during the preseason at Soldier Field and attended one regular season game in Cincinnati.
Cincinnati quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese worked out LeFevour at Central Michigan last spring.
Goforth compares LeFevour to former Wheaton North quarterback Kent Graham, who operated a run-based offense in high school but enjoyed an 11-year NFL career,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], playing for seven teams from 1992-2002.
Last spring, LeFevour became just the second Benet player ever drafted into the NFL when the Chicago Bears selected him in the sixth round. He joins Steve Baumgartner, a second-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 1973 who played seven seasons for the Saints and Houston Oilers, as the only Redwings to reach the NFL (kicker John Duvic was briefly a replacement player for the Bears during the 1987 players strike, but that is not counted as active service by the league).
NEW CHALLENGES
Indeed, LeFevour was thrilled by being drafted by his home town team.
LeFevour appeared in all four preseason games for the Bears, completing 19 of 41 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and one interception. But after the Bears signed veteran Todd Collins to back up Jay Cutler and Caleb Hanie, they released LeFevour a week before the regular season started.
The western suburbs have produced several NFL quarterbacks. Chuck Long,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 1981 Wheaton North alum, was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1985 while at Iowa and later played for the Detroit Lions. Batavia native Ken Anderson led the Bengals to Super Bowl XVI after the 1981 season, losing to Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers 26-21.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] “As a senior Dan got us to the state playoffs with a receiving corps that was banged up. His top three receivers didn’t play in the first round game against Batavia. Dan put his team on his back.”
“That’s up to me,” said LeFevour, who turns 24 on March 19. “It depends on how much work I put in. I [will] just try to improve as best I can.”
The Bears hoped to re-sign LeFevour to the practice squad, but on Sept. 5 he was claimed off waivers by the Bengals, who signed him to a four-year contract. LeFevour is Cincinnati’s third-string quarterback behind starter Carson Palmer and Palmer’s brother, Jordan. He dressed for all 16 games but did not see any action,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though the Bengals liked his skills.
LeFevour’s future,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like that of all NFL players, is in limbo because of the labor uncertainty. The collective bargaining agreement expires March 3 and if players and owners are not able to reach accord on a new contract, a lockout is widely expected.
Benet athletic director Gary Goforth, who was LeFevour’s high school football coach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], did not expect him to become an NFL player. Neither did college coaches, few of which offered the 6-3, 230-pounder a scholarship.
At Central Michigan LeFevour blossomed into a dual-threat quarterback, leading the Chippewas to a 40-17 record,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including 12 wins in 2009, tying a school record. He finished his collegiate career as the only player in NCAA history to pass for over 12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 yards and rush for more than 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],500.
“He’s very versatile and a bright guy. He comes highly recommended.”
“He’s able to help me out,” LeFevour said. “I think I made a large step forward this year. I learned a lot and I was able to observe and learn the new system.”
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] “It’s basically a full-time job,” LeFevour said. “From Wednesday to Friday you’re in practice and meetings for eight hours a day. You’re there all day.”
LeFevour completed 66 percent of his passes for 12,905 yards and 102 touchdowns and he rushed for 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],948 yards and another 47 scores. He and Vince Young are the only Division I quarterbacks to pass for 3,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.
“It’s just amazing,” Judy LeFevour said. “It’s a lot of fun. Everyone [in Downers Grove] has been so supportive of Dan.”
Though he was lightly recruited, LeFevour said directing Benet’s run-oriented offense helped him develop his quick feet, which he used with unprecedented success at the college level. And he never lost his ambition.
COLLEGE STAR
TURNING PRO
The toughest part of playing in the NFL is something LeFevour said most fans don’t have a feel for.
LeFevour faced some big adjustments coming out of college. After operating out of the shotgun in the spread offense at Central Michigan, LeFevour had to get used to taking more snaps from under center in the Bengals’ pro-style passing offense. But he had a mentor in Jordan Palmer, who made a similar adjustment after running the spread at UTEP.
“It’s the speed of the game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” he said. “You think you have a feel for the speed of it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it’s a lot faster than it appears on TV. It’s something you can’t [prepare for] until you experience it.”
FUTURE PROSPECTS
But Goforth predicts LeFevour will stick in the NFL.
“It was definitely a surprise,” LeFevour said. “They tell you that it never works out that you’re drafted by the team you want to be drafted by. It set me up for success.”
That was primarily because he played in a run-oriented offense at Benet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which he led to two playoff appearances in 2003 and 2004. The Redwings advanced to the quarterfinals in LeFevour’s junior year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], losing to St. Rita 28-20. They lost 26-14 in the first round to Batavia the following season. LeFevour is the school’s all-time career touchdown leader with 54.
“But I will say this—I always tell people I thought he was the best quarterback in the state coming out [of high school],” Goforth said. “[College] recruiters look at big schools first, perennial powers second and systems third. We ran a running offense and Dan directed it very well.
Another thing fans may not realize is the preparation that goes into getting ready for Sundays.
LeFevour, 23, has already experienced much in a football career that began at Benet Academy and continued at Central Michigan. A graduate of St. Mary of Gostyn elementary school, LeFevour starred in football and basketball at Benet, but during his prep days few people anticipated he would one day make the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Will LeFevour be as successful as those four?
“I think it’s cool,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” Goforth said of having a former player reach the NFL. “It couldn’t happen to a nicer kid. He’s a good ambassador for not only us, but I’m sure Central Michigan probably feels the same way. He’s a good example for young athletes coming out of the college ranks.
“He had great command of his own situation,” Zampese told the Bengals website on Sept. 7. “He knew every in and out of his offense. He could speak it in a no-huddle situation. He walked me through it on film and we did it on the field. It was a real thorough day getting to know him and his football mind.
