FFXIV News: Last week I was invited up with a select number of press to get the chance to spend some unadulterated time with Square Enix's magnum opus, Final Fantasy XIV. Going into this I already knew I was impressed with the game, having had a short stint playing in a structured multiplayer setting back at E3, but last week was the first time I got the opportunity to play what I wanted, where I wanted, for as long as they would let me. I can tell you now, the game is, in a word,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beautiful.

Here are the screenshots from the press ev [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] ent. Simply click on them to maximize and enjoy all the wondrous beauty of this MMO:

Visuals

It's the stunning artwork that hits you right away. I am most impressed with the quality of the ingame rendered cutscenes, but the lavish vistas and intricate character armor are nothing to sneeze at. No word yet on exactly how powerful your computer must be to get this amount of quality. I cannot stress enough how beautiful this game is. Like all the single-player Final Fantasy ti [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] tles, the world of Eorzia is won that I loved exploring.

I spent most of my time in the shaded forests of Gridania, but those members of the press who were running through the arid metropolis of Ul'dah seemed equally impressed.

Battle Mechanics

I was sad to see that FFXIV plays much like the single player games in the Final Fantasy series. While they've definitely refined combat and done away with the belabored menu structure required to perform battle actions in FFXI, there is still an element of turned-based combat that simply does no Final Fantasy XIV power leveling t work well in a persistent game.

A perfect example are the cast times required to heal your party members. During the tour we all got the opportunity to play some high-level decked out characters to see what the end-game felt like. I myself took on the role of a mage elementalist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and spent a couple of minutes weeding through the four bars of spells my character had at his disposal. I then set to buffing my party, only to find that each of my abilities had a sometimes rediculous wait time, which means that by the time I was a Final Fantasy XIV gold lmost ready for the Stoneskin buff to go off on my party members, they had already run off out of range. Fortunately most of the healing spells you cast are AOE, otherwise attempting to heal a party mid-combat would have been nigh impossible.

I cannot speak for how the melee abilities work at the higher levels, but I do know I ran into a bit of strangeness when I created my first character. I created a cook, since I've been waiting for a game I do not have to adventure in if I don't want to, only to realize that the starting zone re FinalFantasy XIV account quires you to fight even if you aren't equipped to do so. As a cook the only recourse I had at my disposal was to throw rocks, something that does little more than irritate the wolves attempting to eat my ears off. Even when I did get a toss off, there was a significant wait time required before I could throw another rock. These pauses while waiting to throw a rock really diminish the sense of immersion a player feels, since you have to wait for nonsensical bars to fill up before you can inflict any damage. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy XIV Gil the wolf knaws on your bones and calls your ribcage Sunday dinner.

User Interface

The UI in Final Fantasy XIV is very streamlined, with your screen clutter limited to a chat box, your action bars, and your minimap. The action bars are incredibly customizable, and you have upwards of half a dozen or more to cycle through as you play. I did appreciate the simple keystroke option for flipping through the action bars, but as I was unused to the keyboard setup, I spent more time clicking the various actions than hitting their correspon FFXIV power leveling ding hotkeys.

The most confounding thing with this games UI is the persistent need on Square Enix's part to stick to their archaic menu structure. In order to do anything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including sit, standing, accepting party invites or quests, one must open up the main menu. This extra step can cost you valuable time, plus it's extremely clunky in an age when most games will allow you to do all these functions through popups and shortcut keys.

Overall

In the end,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Final Fantasy XIV is too beautiful to allow some clunky mechanics FFXIV account to prevent me from enjoying the game. I admit I got invested in the starting area quests, wanted to know what happened to the characters therein, and was impressed by the heavily instanced zones. From only the few hours I spent in Eorzea, I can say without a doubt this is a game worth looking into if you love MMOs. While the similarities in structure between this game and its predecessor are sometimes annoyingly evident, there is a depth of story and a breathtaking visual style that remain all its own.
