CSU students lose home in blaze
The Poudre Fire Authority responded to a call at 9:31 on Saturday night regarding a “rather significant” house [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] fire at the home of a group of CSU students. The fire was under control within 30 minutes of the initial call. The home was located on Timber Lane, a side-street that intersects West Elizabeth in-between Taft Hill and Overland, in a highly student populated subdivision. A large group of bystanders from throughout the neighborhood gathered at the scene, watching as large plumes of flames shot in the air while firefighters fought to control the blaze.
“I’ve got to say that it was certainly a significant house fire,” said Tom DeMint, a public information officer for the Poudre Fire Authority. The identity of the students is not known at this time, though according to neighbors, they were constantly involved in welding projects [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and were mechanical engineering majors. While the official cause of the fire is unknown, neighbors say that it may have been caused by a propane tank malfunction. At the time of reporting, it was unknown as to whether the residents were home at the time of the fire.“They are really, really nice people, and I feel really, really bad,” said Erik Guberud, a sophomore engineering major, who lives across the street from the home. “When I first heard about the fire, I was just shocked, and then concerned about damage and mine and my neighbor’s wellbeing.”Guberud’s next door neighbor, Marian Gartner, responded to the blaze by dousing her home and Guberud’s home with water from their hose, attempting to protect themselves from the embers that were carried by the evening’s strong winds.
“My main concern right now isn’t my house,” Gartner said. “I just want to make sure that they’re alive.”Six fire engines and two ladder trucks were sent to the scene, a response that DeMint says “is not unusual for a fire of this size.”The fire was initially reported by Angie Sepulbebo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a Fort Collins resident [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] who was simply driving through the neighborhood at the time of the blaze.“I was driving by, and when I saw the fire, it became a rush to just knock on door and to get neighbors aware of what was happening,” Sepulbebo said.No further details are known at this time, though according to authorities, the fire is under control.
