[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] The NFL has been so smart with the marketing of their product. They are constantly in the news all off season, with the Franchise tag deadline, the combine, the pro days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the draft, restricted free agency,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], total free agency,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rookie mini camps, the OTAs... It's all spaced out over the entire NFL off season just to keep football front and center on all news media outlets. And it works. The NFL is far and away the most popular sports brand in America. Would Roger Goodell jeopardize that?
Under Armour spokesperson Diane Pelkey would not confirm the signing and Newton’s marketing agent, IMG’s Carlos Fleming,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], also declined to comment on the deal.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] The signing provides great consistency to Under Armour. Thanks to its deal with Auburn,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the school’s national championship this season, Newton arguably became the most identifiable athlete of the brand in the company’s 15-year history. He typically wore 17 Under Armour logos each Saturday during the season.
The battle for Newton came down to Under Armour versus Nike. Under Armour wanted Newton more,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it was a question as to whether Nike, which has more than 20 times the marketing budget of UA, wanted to pay up enough to use Newton as a part of leveraging its upcoming exclusive apparel deal. Ultimately, Under Armour was willing to put more guarantees behind Newton’s marketing future.
Newton will be allowed to wear shoes with Under Armour logos on the field in the near future though his jersey will have Reebok logo on it. The brand will be the official apparel sponsor for next season and in 2012, Nike will take over for the next five years. Under Armour has combine rights in the near future and its players will be allowed to wear gloves with the interlocking UA starting in 2012. Newton does not wear gloves.
Nike is already blessed with riches in the NFL endorsement market. They have two of the most marketable quarterbacks in the league – neither of which they have used in advertising – in new Super Bowl champion Aaron Rodgers(notes) from the Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets’ Mark Sanchez(notes). The only player in this year’s draft class that Nike has signed is former LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson, who is projected to be drafted among the top five players. Last year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the company signed Tim Tebow(notes) and Ndamukong Suh(notes) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Under Armour picked up league MVP Tom Brady(notes) this season after his deal with Nike expired. The company also has Ray Lewis(notes),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Miles Austin(notes) and Anquan Boldin(notes) on its roster .
There is no way the NFL dosen't play in 2011. There's just way too much money at stake, for all parties involved, including the establishments that depend on the revenue that the NFL brings to their communities.
The rookie wage scale is a must. Even though the owners were stupid enough to start overpaying for unestablished rookies at superstar levels in the first place,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there still needs to be something in place. The owners will be protected from Jamarcus Russell type bust deals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that will allow more money to go to the more deserving veteran players.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] I personally don't like the idea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I think an 18 game schedule will happen, which will lead to expanded rosters and more jobs for the players. I still think a 16 game schedule with an added bye week gives the best of both worlds. Injured players will have an extra week to heal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which could lead to a better product,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the 18th week of regular season games will be a money maker for the networks and the NFL [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Rex Ryan... I dig the confidence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but maybe it's time to shut up until you actually win something?
The NFL Draft will take place on April 28-30, regardless of whether or not a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is in place. Newton is expected to be drafted in the Top 10.
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] News of the signing could not have come at a better time. Shares of the company’s stock closed at an all-time high of $69.81 a share on Friday. The company is readying to introduce its first line of cotton apparel, called Charged Cotton, next month.
Monday is Valentine’s Day, which is a special day for Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank. Money from a Valentine’s Day rose business became part of the initial seed money to start Under Armour in 1996 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] wholsale.
