Three women face charges for newport cigarettes thefts
DECATUR - Three women are facing charges after they reportedly stole more than $1,500 worth of newport cigarettes from a Circle K gas station last month. Kanisha M. Lewis, 17, is charged with four counts of burglary, along with her aunt, Shawanda A. Frye, 29. Fyre's sister and Lewis' mother, Gwendolyn M. Williams, 39, faces one count of burglary. Video surveillance captured Lewis and Frye stealing a total of 24 cartons of Newport cigarette from the Circle K gas station at 3002 N. Water St., according to a sworn statement by a police officer. Williams reportedly assisted in the last of the four incidents. Police said the thefts took place on Nov. 21, Nov. 23, Nov. 24 and Nov. 26. On each occasion, Frye allegedly distracted the gas station clerk by asking for scratch-off lottery tickets located behind the register. When the clerk turned around, Lewis reportedly reached over the counter and stole cartons of cigarettes. Lewis allegedly took four cartons of cigarettes on each of the first three occasions. On Nov. 26, however, police said Williams helped Lewis conceal 12 cartons of cigarettes in a coat and carry them out of the store. According the sworn statement, Lewis told police she stole the cigarettes for Frye. Each carton is valued at $65, putting the total value of the stolen cartons at $1,560.(source: www.olymall.com)
