A Ravensmead labourer was crushed to death by a concrete mixer he was apparently cleaning on Friday, and on Sunday his distraught family still had a string of unanswered questions.“Why was the machine switched on if it was not in use and he was cleaning it? Who switched on the machine?”These were some of the questions David Boyce’s relatives asked. It was a second fatal accident Concrete Mixer involving a concrete mixer in Cape Town in less than a month. A man was killed and another sustained serious injuries after he and a fellow worker apparently fell into a concrete mixer while cleaning the machine at a Vissershoek site last month.
When paramedics found Boyce, 41, dead at his workplace in the Parow industrial area, his upper body was crushed and still trapped in the machine.“The man had sustained fatal crushing injuries to the upper part of his body and was later declared dead at the scene,” ER24 spokesman Andre Visser said.He said “a lack of communication Concrete Mixer of some sort” led to the machine being turned on while Boyle was inside it,pvc涂层布, cleaning.“(Boyce) had some bad injuries - his whole upper body was crushed.”Visser said the massive machine looked like a “big toaster oven”.
According to a police report, Boyce, a labourer at Denken Concrete - a brick company in the Parow industrial area - had been instructed by his supervisors to clean the concrete pan mixer. He had cleaned the machine several times before.Ravensmead police spokesman Mark Wicks confirmed that the accident took place after the operator of the machine Concrete Mixer switched it on not knowing that Boyce was still working. He said police had opened an inquest docket and would investigate. He had rushed to the scene after a crying friend’s screams woke him up on Friday morning. However, his brother’s employer had asked them not to see the body and apologised to the family. They did not blame anyone, yet, for Boyce’s death and would wait for police to investigate. They wanted answers from the company owner.
