Shelter overpopulation leads to mold
Six years after the opening of the St. Vincent de Paul Gateway Hotel for Women and Families, bathrooms Mold in the building are being gutted and remodeled due to a persistent mold problem. The city of Dayton, Montgomery County and the state of Ohio combined resources for the $570,000 project for the 220-bed shelter that also includes construction of a program room for adult classes and additional laundry facilities.
“The bathrooms were used so much it was difficult to get them dried out,Lithium Battery,” said Rob Anderson, director of operations for St. Vincent de Paul. “The population is much greater than they were designed for.”On Sunday, 69 single women and 23 families were housed at the shelter, including 53 children. Overall, there was an 11 percent Mold increase between 2009 and 2010 in the number of homeless single women seeking shelter or transitional housing in the community.Joyce Probst MacAlpine, Montgomery County’s manager of housing and homeless solutions, said the building at 120 Apple St., near Miami Valley Hospital, was designed as a men’s shelter and wasn’t set up for the number of families seeking beds.
“We had been talking about how to provide better shelter for women. The bathrooms were a part of that. The mold was something we wanted to address,” she said. “When this project is done, we feel like our shelter system Mold will meet the needs of the community.”On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Commission approved an additional $50,000 for the shelter renovations, bringing the county’s total contribution to $270,000. The city and state contributed $150,000 each.
